Port Hedland Iron (PHI) aims to be first commercial scale, new, low emissions iron producing facility built in Australia to dramatically reduce emissions intensity in iron production

The Project will process Australian iron ore to produce high quality reduced iron for use in steel making overseas.  Using MIDREX Flex technology, the project will be able to use hydrogen as a reductant and is a critical first step in decarbonising the steel making value chain.

  • 3 – 3.5 Mtpa of iron ore consumed.
  • 2 Mtpa Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) produced.
  • 0.7 Mtpa Iron Ore Pellets exported
  • Hydrogen use rises from 2,000-200,000tpa

Decarbonisation

Reduce emissions intensity of steel making (compared to current methods) by 50% from start up and 92% as hydrogen becomes available.
