Port Hedland Iron (PHI) aims to be first commercial scale, new, low emissions iron producing facility built in Australia to significantly reduce emissions intensity in iron production

The Project will process Australian iron ore to produce high quality reduced iron for use in steel making overseas.  Using MIDREX Flex technology, the project will be able to blend-in renewable  hydrogen as a reductant and is a critical first step in decarbonising the steel making value chain.

Processing and Export

  • 3 – 3.5 Mtpa of iron ore consumed.
  • 2 Mtpa Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) produced.
  • 0.7 Mtpa Iron Ore Pellets exported
  • Hydrogen consumption subject to availability and economic viability.

Decarbonisation

Reduce emissions intensity of steel making (compared to current conventional methods using coal) by approximately 50% from start up using natural gas and with potential for further reductions by blending hydrogen as it becomes available.
